Springfield Village is designed to promote sustainable behaviours as well as using low/zero carbon energy technologies. Key elements of the site’s sustainable development include:

  • A centralised efficient district heating network providing heat and hot water to the new hospital buildings, care home and housing.

  • BREEAM Excellent new hospital buildings and care home incorporating: natural and heat recovery ventilation; low energy lighting; exterior shading and Building Management Systems for optimising and controlling energy use.

  • PV panels on the new build housing and Pavilion café in the park

  • Good access to public transport and improved pedestrian and cycle links

  • Capacity for a new bus route

  • Electric vehicle charging and car club

  • New parkland, gardens and wetlands including a wide range of native grass, shrub and tree species (c. 700 new trees) to promote biodiversity in the park

Sustainable Construction

STEP’s main contractor for the hospital and infrastructure construction Sir Robert McAlpine is delivering a range of sustainable construction initiatives from local employment and skills opportunities to reducing waste going to landfill and promoting sustainable behaviours amongst its workforce.
